English Premier League giants, Liverpool have reportedly activated the €25 million release clause for Atletico Madrid striker, Diego Costa.
According to English newspaper, The Express and various reports in Spain, Liverpool have met the player’s release clause and will now deal exclusively with the player and his agent personally, without interference or negotiations with Atletico Madrid themselves.
Costa had a breakout season with Los Colchoneros last season and was expected to share time with former Barcelona striker, David Villa in Atletico’s attempt at Champions League glory, however, Liverpool have stepped in an complicated matters by activating the player’s release clause immediately with the first formal bid.
Costa scored 20 goals in 44 total matches, but has faced disciplinary issues for his aggressiveness and, at times, goating players into fouls.
However, Costa, according to the Guardian, is not expected to be a replacement for Luis Suarez and is a type of player Liverpool manager, Brendan Rodgers is looking for according to recent statements over remaining transfer targets.
“They have to be of the right quality, that’s the bottom line. We’ve got money to spend on getting that quality in, but if it’s not available I won’t waste it for the sake of bringing a player in. We’re really working hard to bring in the type of profile that can really help us push on. We just need to see if that’s available and affordable.”
It will now be up to Costa if he wishes to make the move to Anfield or remain at the Vicente Calderon, while Liverpool are hoping to reach a swift conclusion within the next week.
